During the Second World War, Malraux worked on his last novel, The Struggle with the Angel, the title drawn from the biblical Jacaob. The Manuscript was destroyed after Malraux was captured by the Gestapo in 1944. A surviving first section, English title The Walnut Trees of Altenburg (University of Chicago Press, reprint 1992), was published after the war.
