Still reeling from her daughter's nearly disastrous kidnapping, Kay struggles to find her footing in the witch community. Her new position in the Baxter Family isn't what she thought, as it seems that few of the resources the Family is supposed to have actually exist.

The vampire threat is still growing, and Kay fights to get witches and vampires to cooperate with non-magic people. Just when she thinks she's got things moving in the right direction, she's blindsided by a custody battle with her ex-husband.

On top of finding out that Androwe, one of the vampires she had been depending on, might be closer to her enemies than she'd thought, long-hidden secrets threaten to change her understanding of who she really is.
