Description

An Antarctic Mystery is a book by French author Jules Verne, first published in 1897. It is the forty-fourth book in the Extraordinary Voyages series. A continuation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1838 novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, the book tells the story of Mr. Jeorling, a wealthy American naturalist who is studying the wildlife on the remote Kerguelen Islands, in the south Indian Ocean. Wishing to get back to the United States, he finds a ship and it's captain, Len Guy, who agrees to take Jeorling as least part of the way home. As they start their journey, they come across an iceberg with a dead body on it, which turns out to be a sailor from the ship in Poe's novel, the Jane. The captain then reveals himself to be the brother of William Guy, who disappeared on the Jane along with his crew. He convinces Jeorling to go with him, in search of the lost party. An Antarctic Mystery is set eleven years after the events in Edgar Allan Poe's novel.
