George Wilson describes the growth of radical nationalism in Japan following World War I, basing his study on the life and writings of one of its chief proponents, Kita Ikki. Although not a typical radical nationalist, Kita illustrated the movement’s opposition not to modernization but to slavish imitation of Western precedents. Kita has generally been classified as Japan’s first “fascist” thinker, but this intensive study shows his thought to be an eclectic mixture of socialism and other Western ideas together with a traditionally Japanese attitude toward society as a harmonious blend of the state and the people.
