A description of the independent workers' organisations created before and during the famous wave of strikes in South Africa's gold and platinum mines in 2012.
The title is perhaps slightly misleading because the workers' committees described were clearly independent of the trade unions, both the right-wing "sell-out" miners' union, the NUM (which the miners openly rebelled against), or the more left-wing AMCU.
