This book is meant to serve more than one purpose. Apart from being a practical guide with an itinerary for those adventurous travelers to one of the world's most remote regions, it explains the rich and diverse cultural heritage that still exists in the Kailash Mandala and the spiritual and religious significance of the region.

The Humla and Karnali region of Nepal, and Ngari ofTibet, have always seen pilgrims and caravan traders, travelling up and down from the Jadan to Khasan. A folkoral culture and tradition has evolved over the centuries, but it had never been properly documented.

The 1962 Sino-Indian frontier war, and the socio-economic changes in the trans-Himalaya has had a devastating impact on the lives of the trans-Himalayan people who used to enjoy prosperity and autonomy through the Tibetan trade.  The opening of the Simikot airport in 1978, and the route to Kailash, later in 1993, however, has stimulated a new type of economic growth by making Humla the staging point for pilgrims and trekkers going to the Kailash-Manasarovar region.
