"Thousand years of caps and robes" is an elaborate and ambitious study by Tran Quang Duc: reconstructions of Vietnamese costumes in the royal court and folk in about a thousand years from the Ly to Nguyen dynasties (1009- 1945).

Royal attire was always strictly regulated and changed throughout the dynasties. "Thousand years of caps and robes" explained the reason and analyzed the degree of imitation of Chinese costumes in the costume regulations of the Vietnamese dynasties, detailing in detail and meticulous various types of costumes such as the majestic Con Mien (衮冕) of the Emperors, the Imperial clothes, Cung Than (拱辰), O Sa (烏紗), the formal attire of the mandarin, the Queen's Phoenix robe etc. Whereas the costume Folk do not fluctuate much, popular ones include: cross collared robes, the four-body robe, etc. that have existed over hundreds of years of history. The fact that Minh Mang Emperor banned "bottomless pants" was a great event, so that the five-body Ao dai went into folk life and now becomes the most important costume of the Vietnamese people.
